There are many instances where the husband and wife are working in the same office. Some organizations encourage the idea of spouses working as colleagues with each other while for other organizations it is a complete ‘no’. There are both pros and cons associated with this.
Pros:
1.They can cut down on travelling costs as we commute together.
2.They can leave for office at same time, provided their timings are same and hence they can save their office preparation time.
3.In case of office emergencies they can help each other.
4.They can spend more time with each other helping their personal and professional lives.
5.They understand each other’s work pressure which helps them in problem solving even at home also.
6.It can save cost for the company as well- like allowances, company housing and company cars.
Cons:
1.If they are both in the same function or department, when promotions occur, one may have to report to the other.
2.Even if they are in different functional areas, if one is on a more senior footing, the same discomforts arise.
3.Also, the colleagues may complain, feeling that the senior individual is more lenient and showing favoritism when the spouse is involved- Nepotism.
4.The spouse can be over possessive and a small talk with colleagues can make him/her suspicious.
5.Husband normally wants an upper hand in official matters also.
6.Domestic problems can influence them in work as well.
7.Work related conflicts may come to home.
We could also take some lessons from Cricket here. (Cricket probably has a lot to teach in the ER course, as was the case in the first two Dialectic forums). The coach of the England Cricket team, Duncan Fletcher, had welcomed the wives and girlfriends of the players to be with the players during the 2007 World Cup tour. This is what the coach had to say for this, "We've done it on previous tours and on some of the tours when they've arrived we've put in some very solid performances. India was a good example a few years ago when we were losing 1-0 in the Test series and the wives arrived and we ended up drawing the series - they do help when they arrive." He believed that the wives and girlfriends enhanced the morale of the players and hence improved their performance.
On the contrary, the Pakistan Cricket Board had imposed a ban on the player’s wives saying, the country's cricketers will have to leave their wives behind on their tour to for the World Cup. The reason given was that, the wives would be a distraction to the players.
