If we analyze the given story carefully, we will come across the following points –
Pritam Singh was called by the GM HR. He did not know what the reason was. But the first thing that came to his mind was – Am I going to be fired? This shows the kind of insecurity that employees have in their minds while working in their organization. Despite being one of the better performers, this fear lurks in the minds of every employee.
The second thing that we come across is the pressure put by the GM(HR) to sign the contract. He says – If you really want to be promoted, you will have to sign this agreement. This shows how your seniors can sometimes become irrational and make even a simple promotion conditional. Pritam is given with no option but to sign the agreement as otherwise he or Jagruti would be fired without any rhyme or reason.
The third thing that we come across from the story is that the employer has not only bought the employer’s mind but also his heart. Not merely his professional life but his personal life is being dictated and ruled by the employer.
If they would not have been working properly in the organization, it would have still made sense to take such action. Initially a mere warning would have been sufficient and in case of any further issues, disciplinary action could have been taken. However, by straight away forcing to sign an agreement , it puts employees under tremendous stress and pressure. It might then happen that because of such an agreement, the employer fails to perform and then the wrong reason is ascribed for it.
Office affairs are seriously detrimental to one’s career prospects. . If one recalls, this was shown in a recent hindi movie – Life in a Metro. Sharman Joshi is a young man with dreams, working as a call center executive in a BPO in Mumbai. He silently loves Neha (Kangana Ranaut), a smart young woman who has made it up the ranks in a very short time, due to her relationship with her boss, Ranjeet (Kay Kay Menon). Later we witnessed how the life of each one gets shattered.
Office romance is fairly common these days as the office is where we spend so much of our time. Handled well it can lead to a relationship. Handled badly it can lead to a lawsuit for harassment.
So handly it well is the root of any office relationship. Banning it outrightly is not the solution that the company should be looking for. Infact the company can include it in their mandatory training program to acquit employees about their love relationship and the effect it can have on the organization.
Love can be anywhere, a contract is not the ideal way to deal with it!
